PASSION OF THE SAVIOR
1. Was Jesus asleep in death?
Yes.
1 Corinthians 15:20,21- But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. :21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.
John 9:4 -I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.
Ecclesiastes 9:10 - Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.
Acts 13:36, 37 - For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption: :37 But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption.
2. Was Jesus preaching in Death? If so, where?
No, refer to the previous question and answer.
(This question is included because of a common misunderstanding of 1 Peter 3:18-22.)
3. On what day of the week was Jesus raised from the dead?
On the first day of the week.
Mark 16:1, 2, 9 - And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. :2 And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun. :9 Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils.
John 20:1, 19 - The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre. :19 Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.
Matthew 28:1, 7 – In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. :7 And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.
Luke 24:1,21 - Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. :21 But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.
Matthew 12:40 - For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
4. Describe Jesus’ person after his resurrection.
He had the same appearance as He had before His death.
Luke 24:36-43 – And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. :37 But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. :38 And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? :39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. :40 And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet. :41 And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat? :42 And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb. :43 And he took it, and did eat before them.
John 21:12-14 – Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord. :13 Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise. :14 This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.
Acts 1:3 -To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:
With 1 Corinthians 15:4-8 - And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: :5 And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: :6 After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. :7 After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. :8 And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.
Philippians 3:21 – Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.
Mark 16:14 – Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.
Matthew 28:10 - Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.
Acts 7:55 - But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,
John 20:20, 22, 27-29 - And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord. :22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: :27 Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. :28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God. :29 Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.
Revelation 1:7 - Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.
Luke 24:15, 16, 31, 33, 34 – And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. :16 But their eyes were holden that they should not know him. :31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. :33 And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them, :34 Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.
Acts 10:40, 41- Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly; :41Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.
1 Peter 1:3, 4 – Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, :4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,
Acts 2:26, 27, 31, 32 - Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope: :27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. :31He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. :32 This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.
Acts 13:35-37 - Wherefore he saith also in another psalm, Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. :36 For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption: :37 But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption.
