Peter makes it very clear that God's plan of the ages is comprised of 3 distinct ages, referred to as "heaven and earth":

2 Pet 3:5-7
5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:
7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

This concept is also recorded in John's writings in the book of Revelation:

Rev 21:1
1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first (or "former") heaven and the first ("former") earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

Clearly this is the 3rd heaven and earth.
